Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou
Transcendent piano solos from 1960's Ethiopia, composed and performed by an Ethiopian woman, who left home at 19 years old, to join a convent. The album, produced in 1963 by Buda Musique, is called, humbly, Ethiopiques, Vol. 21: Piano Solo. I recommend it in its entirety, on repeat. One of my favorite songs on the album is Homesickness.
I haven't even begun to explore the 29 volumes of Ethiopiques, but it seems some people are trying to make a documentary about this nun's legacy and there is a music foundation in her name. Emahoy, born in 1923, is currently 93 years old.
